Advise specialist students' internships, portfolio reviews, and defenses

Sarah Jaremko's K-12 Administrative Portfolio

Valerie Shirley's Director of Special Education Portfolio

I served as advisor to several specialist students and was privileged to guide them to the completion of their internship programs including chairing their final portfolio defenses.  I oversaw the development of students' K-12 Principal  and Director of Special Education licensure. I witnessed them grow in skill and confidence in each of the required core competencies as well as the realization of who they had become as leaders.  I was so very proud of the progress they made during the course of their specialist degree preparation.

Advise doctoral student internships
I was the supervising advisor for several doctoral students'  internships.  These students' internship experiences ranged from working closely in a non-profit organization for Hmong women leadership development; to being a contributing member of a school district's equity team; to co-teaching a Masters-level class with me.  I witnessed these doctoral students grow in skill, confidence, and realizaton of purpose as they used their gifts, talents, and expertise to aid other organizations.

Brian Jones' Dissertation Committee Member

Brian Jones' research focused on the effectiveness of two different high school-based college preparation programs along racial lines. Because of his experiences with racial equity in my classes, he asked me to be a member of his dissertation committee.  I am proud to say that Brian's research and defense were very well done and reflected his care and learning about barriers and bridges between students of color and college admissions. I asked him some hard and pointed questions about the design of his study and how how these questions would help him to unearth the answers he was seeking.

Becky Gerdes' Dissertation Committee Member

Becky Gerdes was a doctoral student at Bethel University.  She had originally asked Dr. Julie Carlson to be on her committee.  As Julie was on sabbatical, Becky asked me to also serve as a member in case Julie was indisposed and because I had experience being a K-12 administrator.  As it turned out, both Julie and I, along with faculty from Bethel were able to support Becky in the completion of her disseration and defense.

Offering a Masters student's independent study course
Due to our department's redesign of our Masters program, a student was unable to take her last class during the Spring semester.  I agreed to offer the Critical Race Theory in Education course in the summer as an independent study. The student, a Native American woman, brought such a rich perspective to the coursework.  She was able to adeptly tie her knowledge of  the historical treatment of the Indigenous people of the United States to the tenets of CRT.  An example of her thoughtful and scholarly writing is offered as an artifact.  My only regret is that I didn't have the opportunity to have her in the large class setting where I know that her perspective would have benefitted the entire class.
